Extreme Orienteering Challenge

This trip is designed as a challenging, multi-sport expedition that starts along the mid-coast region of Maine and, depending on the group, may take you deep into in the heart of the Maine North Woods. First we’ll introduce and review topographic maps and aerial photographs, scales, compasses, Global Positioning Survey (GPS) equipment, and navigation procedures. Your group or team will then use these skills to navigate from coastal Maine to inland areas in search of pre-selected target locations or control points. These may be on land or water, in locations ranging from the tide pools of Maine’s rocky coast to deep in the middle of Maine’s north woods.

Along the way, team members will be exposed to a wide variety of physical and mental challenges that may include brain-teasers, riddles, scavenger hunts, climbing tree or rock walls, or even building your own mode of transportation or method of access to a control point. Difficulty levels of terrain and challenges vary by course package and can be tailored to the interests and needs of corporate and youth groups or 10 or more. Team members will have to work together and apply their orienteering skills and the skills of problem-solving, planning, communication and strategy to effectively perform the challenges at each control point, navigate from point to point, and complete the course. Portions of this may be competitive for teams, all in good fun of course, and at the end of each day there will be plenty of good-natured reflection on that days tasks. You’ll retire each day with the satisfaction and contentment that comes with a day of physical and mental adventure.
This trip is a particularly good one for corporate groups and youth groups because of its potential for team building and leadership lessons. Groups will be assigned an orienteering counselor who will work with you to develop specific theme-based challenges and tailor activities with your groups specific interests and needs in mind.
