The diversity of habitats around New England is impressive: pelagic, estuarine, grassland, deciduous and coniferous forest, alpine, and a large variety of wetlands. The birding afforded by these habitats is exceptional. Our trip will take in a large number of these habitats and we’ll see large number of bird species, but not in a “lets hurry so we can check off some more” fashion. We’ll take time to understand and enjoy the habitats, the
niches, competition pressures, and general ecology of the birds we see.
We’ll visit several locations of major bird research projects, and discuss project objectives and survey methods, and get a taste of ornithological research.

We’ll include some thought-provoking discussions on the perils faced by various types of birds: things like deforestation of winter habitat in the tropics for neotropical migrants, how the “reforesting” of the northeast is impacting habitat for grassland birds, and a variety of other topics. Over coffee and meals, we’ll chat about recent trends in populations for various species, and what, if anything is being done in response to changes.
This is a great adventure for student groups, special interest groups, and birding clubs. We have the professional qualifications and flexibility to adapt this into a field ornithology course, complete with introduction to survey techniques, avian biology, and interpretation of avian behavior.
