The northeastern United States holds an incredible diversity of forest types and beautiful rivers and lakes. Towering virgin white pine forests, stubby pine sand barrens, expansive beaver meadow flowages, beautiful and understated bogs, majestic northern hardwood forests, undeveloped lakes, and many more. On this tour, we’ll hike, canoe, bike, and kayak to and through a fascinating mix of destinations scattered from the Adirondacks of New York, to the mountains and lakes of Maine. The destinations will vary annually, and seasonally, and can be customized to focus on specific group interests.
The goals will not vary, however: seeing and gaining insight into the ecology and wildlife of these beautiful areas, and gaining an appreciation for the risks and pressures they are being subjected to. Spring trips will especially focus on breeding birds, and we’ll visit a large variety of habitats to work up an impressive list of species. Summer will emphasize the “season of plenty” and look for signs of birds and mammals “leaving the nests” and surviving their youth. Lastly, fall will take advantage of fall foliage to concentrate on forest ecology and the “season of transition” for birds and mammals. We’ll search out and witness the ecology of moose, beaver, ravens, forest birds, golden eagles, wetland birds, loons, and many more species.
