Winter Ecology Exploration

This adventure is designed for hardy souls who want to experience the challenges and rewards of the sometimes harsh New England winter, during a season that receives the fewest visitors. Visit and experience the bold Maine coast when thunderous waves are most impressive, and see the snow covered high peaks of New England, and the beautiful and understated forested rivers and streams. This is one of our favorite adventures for introspection, because of the stark beauty and ecology of this country in the winter.

We’ll cross-country ski and snowshoe hike in a variety of habitats, from the coast of Maine to interior mountains of New England. Along the way, we’ll view wildlife in the winter and their signs, being careful not to add stress during this taxing time of year. We’ll identify and follow wildlife tracks, and practice some winter wildlife calls of animals like coyotes and owls. At our different locations, we’ll explore how birds, mammals, and amphibians adapt to survive the harsh climate and conditions. And all of this within the backdrop of a rollicking good winter excursion!

Activities: Canoeing, hiking, touring kayaking, mountain biking, white water rafting (depending on season).
Meals and Lodging: They’ll be heavy doses of hot apple cider, and hot-cooked meals. We’ll be staying at cozy inns and B&B’s all with cozy fireplaces, and comfortable chairs with warm lighting for some relaxing evening chats and reads. But we can modify this for groups, to “rough-up” this adventure a bit, with less cozy cabin accommodations, and potentially some winter camping.
Duration: 6 days, 5 nights, Monday through Saturday
Cost: $2,350 per person for standard trip. Cost will be less for cabin/camping option. Contact VO for details.
Schedule:
February 12 through 17, 2007
Additional trips can be arranged upon request for groups of 4 or more.
